One way newbies often "crash" Vim (or Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.) is to
leave them open when closing the OS or (under *x) the X-server. Vim (and
Mozilla applications) should first be properly closed, each app in its
own "proper" way, and only _then_, after they have _totally_ closed (and
their processes have disappeared from the process lists displayed by the
Windows Task Manager, the Gnome System Monitor, the KDE System Guard, or
similar), is it safe to close the window manager and/or the OS.

I believe (but I haven't tested) that this might perhaps not apply to
Linux gvim with Gnome GUI when running under Gnome or KDE, see
|gnome-session| in the Vim help. Maybe 'autowriteall' needs to be set
for 'modified' editfiles to be saved in that case (as it is required to
save them instead of returning an error in the case of a ":qall").

For me it might be slightly (but not much) more often, and it is indeed
when something has really gone wrong -- which could for instance be the
housemaid unwittingly pulling the (desktop) computer's plug from the
wall instead of the radio's in order to plug the vacuum cleaner.
