The 3400c required special versions of 7.6 and 7.6.1. You cannot,
therefore, boot the machine from just any version of the system
software.I have just been through this with a 2400c (technologically
very similar to the 3400c), and so it is all fresh in my mind. There
is even a special updater to 7.6.1 from 7.6 available for download on
Apple servers, specific to the 3400c. Even the more standard system
updater doesn't work.

"Open me" I have never heard of, either. If I were faced with the
problem, I think that I would try to boot the thing from an OS
8.1/8.5/8.6/9.1 CD (or up to 8.5, from a Disk Tools floppy) and see if
that got me anywhere. Maybe somehow the 'Where have all my files gone'
message has been altered by a shareware utility or the like. Booting
into 8.1 or higher might solve the problem, or would at least confirm
that the problem is not that the drive is formatted as an HFS+ rather
than HFS disk. HFS+, as has been noted, was introduced with 8.1, so a
machine booted into OS8 would not be able to access an HFS+ drive.

If you have the means of making a floppy, an 8.1 Disk Tools image is
available at http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/316 . To
work with the image and make a floppy, you'll need another free-from-
Apple download called Disk Copy.

A further thought springs to mind: is anything in the Trash? Maybe
everything was dragged there but the files not deleted. That would be
worth confirming. In this case, the space would be 'occupied' on the
drive but there would be nothing showing up in the Finder.
