there are simple cable adapters expressly for this purpose which run
about $15 at other world computing. still not guaranteed though.

also don't forget that ResEdit can reveal hidden files and make them
unhidden (its freeware).

to open the 3400 case is not as difficult as advertised. After reading
the directions I found online I was able to avoid much of the
disassembly that mentions. the main thing is popping the little
plastic latches starting with the lower right corner, after removing
screws from the bottom and battery and cd.

btw I have a 3400 disk tools floppy, but you don't seem to need it (as
well as ResEdit if you can't find that).
