I can tell you that Liquid Nails won't hold it! I had a Mustek scanner that
happened to. I cleaned off the original tape, gooped it up with Liquid Nails
and let it sit upside down until that was cry. A couple days after putting the
scanner back together the glass fell out because the LN didn't stick to the
plastic.
How I fixed it was at one end it had two little round posts next to the glass,
with small holes in their centers. I used a couple of really tiny sheet metal
screws and washers to hold the glass. The other end had two posts on the bottom
which held up the glass.
If there's nothing you can find on the UMAX for a mechanical fix, try some
urethane glass adhesive, the stuff used to hold windshields on cars.
Clean the old tape off the glass and the scanner housing. The glass is easy,
acetone or lacquer thinner should work. Wear nitrile gloves! Goo-gone or
Goof-off should get it off the plastic but test a spot on the inside to see if
it eats into the plastic.
I dunno where to get *small* tubes of the urethane. Some shops that do
windshield replacement will sell tubes of the glue. It comes in a metal tube
with a threaded plastic nozzle, which you cut off to make the desired size of
glue bead. A job like this scanner glass should use about 1/64th of the tube.
;) Check the expiration date on the tube! Don't let them pawn off an old one on
you. In spite of it being in a sealed, metal caulking tube, the stuff tends to
get really stiff after a year. 'Course you'll need a caulking gun too.
Another possibility is Gorilla Glue. This is a moisture activated polyurethane
glue that sticks to many different things. Clean the glass and plastic then run
a SMALL line of glue around the edges of the opening. Place the glass onto the
plastic and weight it down with something like a phone book. This glue foams up
as it cures and will force things out of position if they're not clamped or
weighted. To ensure the glue works, wipe the surfaces to be glued with a
slightly damp towel before applying it. Usually there's enough moisture in the
air, but that wipe is extra insurance, especially if you live in a dry climate.
With any glue you use, get some blue painter's tape and mask off the outside of
the housing and the top side of the glass. Might want to mask off the underside
too so any glue that squeezes out can be peeled off with the tape after it
dries.
