Nailed the problem: the ELS drive had died. Period. The end. The LPS is working fine back in its LaCie enclosure, reading as SCSI device 1. I'll boot from that.
So, here's to posterity—if you've got an LC II with a Quantum ProDrive ELS, and it won't boot, it's probably the drive. And, using a hard drive out of an external enclosure without terminating resistors won't work. Phew!
