I just washed, yes, washed a Classic motherboard and a Classic II motherboard in my sink in boiled soapy water. Better if you have a dishwashing machine. The goo from the capacitors on the motherboard can make the display look like a checkerboard. The wash fixed both motherboards (after letting them dry for two days) but the Classic II still has no sound. That will require capacitors to be replaced. But the ROMs seldom, if at all, fail.
