"Screen resolution" depends on how many pixels - not phosphors - are on
your monitor and how big your monitor is.
If a monitor is displaying 640x480 pixels and has physical dimensions of
12" by 9", that's about 53x53 dpi (square pixels). If the same monitor
happens to be a multisync monitor and is then set to display 1024x768
pixels, it now has a resolution of about 85x85 dpi (also square pixels).
"Screen resolution" means that there are x number of pixels across and y
number of pixels down in one square inch of physical screen area. Macs
traditionally used 72 dpi square pixels to make WYSIWYG possible - it's a
lot easier to know what's going on if an inch on the screen corresponds to
an inch on the paper.
