Hi Mary,

You've probably tried this, but in case you haven't, try tapping where it says, 
"Background image" and then flicking down with two fingers. I have a book with 
lots of background images, and it reads reasonably well when I do this. You 
could also see whether the Speak Screen feature works. Make sure you've turned 
on Speak Screen in Settings/General/Accessibility. Then ask Siri to speak the 
screen.
