Hi Thanks much. Yes, it still has ios 8.4.1 on it, and I am planning to update this over the weekend, and will then see what happens with the charger. I will also try connecting it to the computer when I am doing the update, and will see if that makes any difference at all.

If it is an older version, you could upgrade to iOS 9.1 and see if this makes a difference. If not I’d try both a different charger and a different cable, the problem could be with any of the involved products, the wall adapter, the cable or the phone. It makes no sense to me having the connector fit both ways, but the phone only wanting to charge one way. Are you using the Apple charging cable, if so it should charge no matter the position. Is this with the wall charger, I would try a hard reset and see if that gets it working.... A hard reset will not erase content or settings, simply refreshes the operating system. Hold the wake sleep button and home button for about 7 seconds to do a hard reset. Try another cable if you have a space, or better yet take it to apple if it is new... position.
