Hi Thanks for the suggestion. No, it is indeed a brand new phone, so I would hope that the latter won't be true. Will see what the phone does after updating it this weekend. Here where I live in South Africa, East London being the city, we don't even have an apple store, so the phone goes back to the network carier, and I truely hope that won't be necessary.
Thanks all the same for the advice on the port. Was the phone a brand new device or was it only new to your household? If the latter and the phone was previously used by another, it is possible that some lint or other detritus has gotten into the lightning port on the phone and is affecting its charging. I've had this happen with both my previous iPhone 5 and my current iPhone 6 and when the port gets stuff in it, the results when plugging in a lightning cable are unpredictable. I've gotten unauthorized cable messages, charging only working when the cable is plugged a certain way, and the cable not staying connected until taking my phones to the apple store to have the port cleaned out. I wanted to mention this in case it might be a possibility. Good luck. If it is an older version, you could upgrade to iOS 9.1 and see if this makes a difference. If not I’d try both a different charger and a different cable, the problem could be with any of the involved products, the wall adapter, the cable or the phone. O f course it’s always best to first illuminate the easy stuff especially since a lot of people have iPhones one can usually find somebody who can lend an adapter or cable. It was indeed the wall charger, and I will see what will happen now after setting the phone up. It makes no sense to me having the connector fit both ways, but the phone only wanting to charge one way. The connector is not marked, so one would not have known that, and then I would have expected it to work like my older iphone 4s, where the cable only fits one way. Thank you for clarifying this. I have, however, heard from a friend in Germany that his 5S charges with the cable plugged in either way, but he can only sync if he plugs it in a certain way. If I had been him and if this was consistant across cables, I would have returned the phone since to me this is a defect. Are you using the Apple charging cable, if so it should charge no matter the position. Is this with the wall charger, I would try a hard reset and see if that gets it working.... A hard reset will not erase content or settings, simply refreshes the operating system. Hold the wake sleep button and home button for about 7 seconds to do a hard reset. Try another cable if you have a space, or better yet take it to apple if it is new... position. I have not had this problem using Apple and Amazon Basics cables. If the phone is in a case, try Regards, Feliciano For tech tips and updates, LIKE www.facebook.com/theblindman12v Follow www.twitter.com/theblindman12v On Nov 11, 2015, at 8:17 PM, Jan Kleinhans <jhkleinh...@telkomsa.net> wrote: Hi all My wife has obtained a new iphone 5s, and so we wanted to charge the phone for the very first time. My understanding was that the connector could be plugged into the phone, no matter what side was up, meaning that it would go into the fitting of the phone regardless of which way around you connected it. Well, it indeed does fit no matter which way you turn the plug, but my problem: does it only charge going in a certain way, as when my sighted child got to the phone, he informed me that the phone was not charged. I was astonished about this, so he turned the connector the other way, and sure enough, the phone is now charging. Is this indeed the way it has to work, as one would have to mark the connector then, especially should you not get any voiceover speech for some reason when charging the phone? I thought I read somewhere that it did not matter which way the connector was connected to the phone with the lightning cables provided, so is this understanding of mine wrong then?
