Yes, Voiceover’s pronounciation leaves a lot to be desired, I hate it when I
dictate and I can’t tell whether it really wrote “no” instead of “now” unless I
go back and spell the word.
Since I sell firearms and ammunition at my retail store, I also would really
like it to say just “30 Cal” as in “C a l” and not tell me the 30 Cal bullets I
have by which of course is meant “30 Caliber” have “30 Calories”.
I can assure Tim Cook that no matter how many he eats he would not gain weight,
but instead he may just break his toilet bowl when he goes to the washroom.

Then there is the terrorist group from Alabama called Alabama-Chabaab. OK, so
it’s supposed to be Al-Chabaab and not Alabama Chabaab and they are in Somalia
and not Alabama, but it’s just plain annoying when my smart phone is so dum.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sandy, a big amen to this one. I remember a long time ago, I had a speech
synthesiser that told me of a place in Israel named "phone number Aviv". It
still makes me laugh.

Hi Jonathan,

Hope you don't mind me responding here, rather than on your webpage.

I would like to extend the parameters of your final wish, pertaining to
the pronunciation dictionary. I would like to see a toggle which would allow me
to stop VO making smart choices re abbreviations. If "mon" is in the text, I do
not want to hear "monday". "feat" should not become "featuring" etc. I write a
lot in Italian, even when the keyboard is set to the Italian and VO is speaking
in Italian, when I write "tue" I always hear "tuesday". There are dozens of
these and they drive me mad!!!! I would like a toggle that will read what is on
the screen, exactly as it is and not interpreted for me.

Since IOS 9.3, every word that begins with "no" followed by just one
letter, so, "not" "now" "nor" "non" and so on, is pronounced as "no" I think
this is just more of the same.

I have got so used to Daniel saying "number" instead of "no" when reading
books that I find myself saying it too!

Finally, although this can be amusing, those of us who are power users of
these devices can become corrupted by them. This applies to PC screen-readers
too! I hear other people speaking/pronouncing like Jaws or Daniel, in real
life and, in my opinion, this could actually become a problem, especially for
young ones relying upon the technology for their education.

Thanks for starting this conversation!

Slainte, Sandy.
