All that being said, I do think that most people don't hold on to their smart phones for five years. I suspect most iPhone users tend to upgrade their phones a bit more often than that. That doesn't mean everyone does or everyone should. I also think it's great of Apple to support their older phones as long as they do.

When I got my new device I did some tests with old 4S and along others, I fully charged it, disabled WiFi and Bluetooth and removed the SIM card from it. I just locked the phone and it was on stand by for the next 8 days meaning the battery in it was significantly strong at the time beeing. Today my old 4S is borrowed to one of my friends and he is using it on a daily basis, talking, texting, hanging on Facebook and following some sites rather more than I did and the battery is holding about day and a half. If this continues in this mannor I asume this phone will last atleast next two years with iOS 9.3.5 or some possible update in 9.x. Of course, working with it is not as nice and ellegant as working with 6S but for someone who just needs calling, texting and alarm clock is far better solution than some cheap Android POC or spending significant ammount of money for some new iOS device. I have to remind you not all countries have free iPhones on operators contract and here in EU we're paying about $100 more for the same models because of EU WWATT and shipping or whatever. I couldn't find anything on line with a quick web search. I remember everyone was surprised when Apple continued to support the 4S with IOS 9, which would have been four years and not five, if the 4S would have stopped at IOS 8. Whether it's a rule or not, and whether it's four or five years, Apple's support for older hardware is truly outstanding in the mobile space. I would agree that if you're worried about whether you get an IOS upgrade or the SE in 2020 then you should wait to see what the fall brings. As Sieghard says though, the SE will still work on the last version of IOS it supports even if you can't move up to the next version. Also, how many people hold on to their smart phones that long in the first place? I've seen us 4S users on this list get responses that we should just upgrade, even when asking questions that have nothing to do with the 4S and it's hardware. Also, if somebody who couldn't care less about the latest features had an iPhone 4S which still worked well for what they are doing they can still use it for years to come with iOS 9.3.5. Of course the reality is that a device that is 5 or 6 or even 7 years old will most likely need a new battery and why pay for that if you could get whatever iPhone is free on contract. The exception here would be somebody who maybe is happy to use the iPhone 4S with a prepaid service or with a low-cost MVNO. My Mom has an iPad 2 from 2011 which also will not get iOS 10 this year. She already asked me if she could still use it and I said that of course she can since while it is a bit slow compared to new devices, it is still going strong. The SE is based on 2015 technology and likely cannot accept the new iOS in 2020. The iPhone 7 will likely not be able to receive a new iOS in 2021, based on past Apple practice. For example, the 4s will not be able to accept iOS 10 that will be out later this year. There will also be a lot of users who are not super technical users who couldn't care less if a new smaller form factor phone were released. They may hear about it in a news article from a major news outlet, but the fact is that a large majority of people are users who do not necessarily follow each Apple Event. Anyhow, when it comes down to it Apple couldn't care less if they made 10% of their user base mad, after all, they did this with the iPad a few years ago. Also, for whatever it's worth, I don't think they are going to release a new 4 inch phone in September, at this point there would be many more rumours and some of which from sources who in the past have been very credible and there are no such rumours. It waited several months before doing so. And, when the phone was released, there was a major back up, so people waited weeks before getting their phones. That is fairly typical for Apple phone releases, and they admitted that they underestimated the demand for this particular phone. So, you have a case where people just purchased phone maybe in June or July, and here we are in September almost, traditional iPhone release time. If Apple releases a new SE now in sync with all of its other phone releases, I think the folks who purchased their phones recently are going to be upset. You know, Apple, why didn't you release this phone last fall with all of the others? Why did you wait over half a year, then release the phone, and right on top of it, release another one? That's why I figure people would not be happy. Are you talking about the same people who get mad when something goes on sale after they paid full price for it? I never got this reasoning since this would mean the only way to make everyone happy is to never put something on sale. I'd assume anyone who knows Apple knows they release new phones in the fall, so I'd think anyone who bought an SE would know that there would be a chance Apple might include a smaller form factor phone in this fall's line up. I don't think Apple would ever promise not to refresh a phone model any more frequently than once a year. I also don't see what anyone who has an SE would be missing out on if Apple upgraded the specs of the SE this fall.On 26/08/16 11:42, Mary Otten wrote: Christine said she preferred, or at least liked the smaller screen. My iPHone 6 was brutally victimized by a car backing up today, and I am now faced with using my upgrade for an SE, or using my daughter’s old 5C until the iPHone 7 comes out. I don’t want the hassle of syncing two new phones in rather quick succession, so I am trying to figure out whether to just get the SE (I like the smaller screen), or wait and see with the iPHone 7. From what I’m able to gather, the main features of interest involve improved camera, which I do not care about, and unless there are any amazing features or improvements, I figure I may as well wait for the ten-year anniversary for Apple to wow me.In short: 1. Take my daughter’s old 5C for a few weeks; or 2. Use my upgrade, get the SE, and wait for next year because the 7 isn’t worth wasting my upgrade or extra money.TIA.
