Janet, 
The reason your phone was behaving like this is because you are using the rotor 
to delete messages you no longer want. When you do this, it causes the phone to 
present a "null" in the app, which can only be gotten rid of by closing 
messages out of the app switcher and re-opening it. If "null" is displayed, new 
messages that come in will not display properly, or at all. So, as a 
workaround, if you ever need to delete a message, use the edit option in the 
top right corner, select the message or threads you want to delete, and then 
press the delete button in the bottom right corner. 
This bug has been reported to Apple and will hopefully be fixed in the next 
release.
