I finally came across the original message from Josh in this thread which I
think is going on way too long! I think the encouragement is good, but the
point was made and I think there is one important aspect to consider, Joshua
says:

I don't want to take the time to learn how to type on the stupid keyboard on
the screen.
I hate the idea of having to type in my apple ID when I want to download an
app. Stupid security.
My flip phone was so much easier. I could just turn it on and it would power
up and away I would go. No having to type in my stupid pass code to unlock my
phone.

I see a complete unwillingness to learn, he compares his flip phone to a
smartphone which is like comparing a bicycle to a car. Of course there is
security and you have to type your password if you want to download apps, you
can't do that on a flip phone and while somebody can see your contacts if you
enter any on your flip phone and it is stolen, lost or otherwise accessed, ,
there really isn't anything else they can get at.
Of course nothing about having to type a password or even a passcode is
different from how it is on a computer except that on the computer you have a
keyboard which you can just as easily have on the iPhone as many have pointed
out and the passcode requirement you can even disable if you don't care about
security or make it super easy by setting up Touch Id which in 99% of the cases
also eliminates typing your password when you buy an app since you can
authenticate simply by putting your finger on the home button. Oh well, to each
their own, I wouldn't even know what to do any more without my iPhone after
almost 10 years of using it daily.

Regards,
Sieghard

All this new information is overwhelming, even to someone like Joshua, who is
not a computer rookie. The iPhone requires that you think about how you do
things in a different way, using different "little gray cells" than you are
used to.

My advice is: learn one new thing every day. Don't try to do it all at once.
Start by letting Siri do stuff. It was months before I sent a text without
Siri. I'm not a power iPhone user by any stretch; I use it like a phone, not a
hand-held computer like the real whiz-bangers do. Just take baby steps.
Eventually you will walk.

Susie

Also, there is voiceover practise mode, which will help, with getting use to
gestures.

Joshua,

It is always painful & frustrating to learn new things. Based on how good you
are with the Victor I know you will get more comfortable with the IPhone too.
You do not have to type everything. For texts, you can just use Siri.
Activate Siri & just say send message to name of someone or even a phone
number. She will ask what you want to say and when you are done she will read
the message back to you & ask if you are ready to send.

When you do need to type something, there is a dictation button to the left of
the space bar. When you touch it Siri says double tap to start dictation then
2 finger double tap when done.

And as others have said, turning on touch typing does make typing much easier.
You just lift your finger when you hear the letter you want. You will get
faster at landing on the right letter right away. There is a delete button at
the bottom right if you make a mistake.

I was going to give you directions on how to change typing to touch but
couldn't find it just now. I did this too long ago to remember how.
Hopefully someone will chime in with detailed instructions on where this
setting is.

Good luck. I predict you will be helping others with their IPhones within a
year!
Sherry Wells

Hi, as a technology teacher, I have to say give the iphone experience a few
weeks to a month. Check out the basics podcasts on Applevis, or maybe someone
can be a mentor for you. It takes a few weeks to get in the mindset of the
iphone. If you're a braille writer, then eventually you will enjoy braille
screen input instead of the screen keyboard. You can set the typing mode to
touch tyling so you lift up on the letter you want. Give the iphone some more
time. You'll not regret it.

seeing AI influence my decision to get an iPhone.
On Monday I'm contacting apple to see about getting it returned and most of my
money back. With apple care and the cost of my phone, I spent almost $1000. I
could have bought a great desktop computer for that much money and it has a
real keyboard on it.
