I've got a screen protector on my new phone and it has a slit in the top of the protector I'm assuming for the earpiece speaker to come through. If I want to hear the status bar, I just tap this slit on the top of my screen, and I can always check my status bar. If I slide 3 fingers either up or down from the status bar, I can access either the notifications, or the control center. It works very well.
