Apple does have good reasons to ditch the home button, and I wouldn't want to see it come back, but they shouldn't wear out in the time someone will be using it and getting rid of them doesn't make it significantly easier to make the phone more water proof. I don't think Apple upgraded the water proof rating of their phones when they ditched the home button and there are plenty of other phones who have a home button and are more water proof than the iPhone. The iPhone still has three other buttons on it, a mute switcht, a Lightning port, a sim tray and speaker grills. I suspect it had more to do with aesthetics and manufacturing costs.

One way to feel the results of the gestures which replace the home button for VoiceOver usders is to go into VoiceOver audio settings and set the haptics to a higher percent. This makes those indicator bumps easier to feel. Personally, even without taking that step, I've never had a problem feeling the bumps even when I can't hear the sounds.
