Teresa, In-app purchasing definitely exists and it's very popular. You can use it, say, to upgrade from List Recorder's Lite version to the pro version.
But Apple does take a cut of all the profits, so if, say, Audible.com offered in-app purchasing of its titles, that would equate to a pretty significant loss for them.
