Here are some thoughts I have:

- Substitute material should not be any plastic because the heat generated by lighting would likely warp it.
- aluminum flashing framed by lightweight angle aluminum (maybe ΕΊ")
- mount lighting a bit off the framing to prevent overheating metal and burning users - wing sheet metal screws to fasten flashing to framing for quick assembly/disassembly

This would probably add to the cost of producing the product; make it about worth $30; I'd anticipate the most expense would be drilling the holes for wing sheet metal screws into the flashing and framing to align properly
