I am replying to this on list after having sent Pinky a message privately.

I bought an iPhone 4 which had previously been activated on Verizon. So obviously it is a CDMA phone. I then activated it on Page Plus which runs on the Verizon network. I bought 2000 minutes which cost me $80 U.S., and those minutes are good for one year. I occasionally wanted data for things like GPS, and when I use data, it is subtracted from my balance, albeit expensive on a per megabyte basis.

Hi Ed.

I had my iPhone, which was with AT&T. My contract ran out, and I was
able to cancel my data plan. I don’t know if, when you get a new plan
for your phone, if you have to get data with the phone service. Also,
as I said, this was with AT&T. I don’t know what other carriers do in
this case.
