As Aman pointed out, it is everybody's choice whether they take the carrier up on a subsidized phone and as a trade-off get an expensive monthly plan or if you can or want to put the money up front and get an unlocked iPhone which you can then put on a month-to-month contract with an MVNO or even T-Mobile which offers less expensive plans. I bought both my iPhone 4 in 2010 unlocked directly from Apple at full price and a year later I did the same with my 4S. I was also able to sell my iPhone 4 32 Gig at the time for $500 as a 1-year old unlocked phone and while I lost $250, I at least was able to upgrade to a 4S without any penelties. A bit later I switched to one of our Canadian MVNO's, Koodo Mobile, and I am now paying $56 a month for unlimited voice Canada wide, unlimited texting, Call Display, Voice Mail and 2 Gig of data. I am saving about $20 a month with this plan over a plan where I could have bought a cheaper phone so that means in 2 years I save close to $500 and if I take that amount and add the cost I would have paid for a subsidized plan, I am pretty much paying the same except I can do what I want with my phone, it was unlocked from day one which is good for me since I do like to travel and I have used it with SIM cards in other countries and I can also sell it easily when I buy a new phone. As for the amount of data, 2 Gig may be enough for you and it's enough for a lot of people. Yes, you can send a lot of email and do a lot of web browsing, but a lot of people also do a lot more than that nowadays. If you end up doing some music streaming, maybe watch the odd Netflix movie, download a few things, do a bunch of Skype or other voice over internet calling, then 2 Gig suddenly is not so much. Anyhow, only using your iPhone for internet and setting it up as a hotspot also won't really work so good if you have things like Wi-Fi connected accessories. I have a Wi-Fi thermostat, my Netatmo weather station, a Sonos music system, my Apple TV, a satellite receiver which I can connect by Cat5 cable to my router etc. This would not work if I only used my iPhone as my primary way to get online. It is certainly not accurate when it comes to AT&T and other GSM carriers. Without a contract, one can use a data only plan, a voice only plan, and even a text only plan on a GSM phone including the iPhone. This is actually fairly simple, the worst case is that one needs to cut a SIM card to do it, and cutting SIM cards is not at all ddifficult. Even that is not usually necessary. As Donald has told us, even CDMA iPhones can be used with voice only plans through other providers. One need not buy any particular plan with any particular phone unless one is on contract or one is using a CDMA phone with a provider that enforces its own rules. Cellular providers would like you to think you need to buy a voice/data plan at least, but you don't.
