Yes, what Annie has conveyed works. this is a solution for those who do not 
want the new additional characters presented if one leaves their finger on a 
certain letter for an extended period of time. Try this...

1. while the keyboard has focus use the rotor gesture to find Typing mode.
2. swipe down once to select Standard typing.
3. Repeat the rotor gesture to return to characters.
4. When you type on the keyboard you can now simply split-tap to enter 
characters.

I really like split tapping as it helps me enter letters very quickly and 
with few mistakes. I also use split-tapping when using the calculator. You 
might want to use your middle finger to touch type on the keyboard and 
split-tap using your index finger.

I also got into troubles with this function. I simply use the normal writing 
function, and now I am using the way that lets me place one finger on the 
letter and if I place another finger besides the letter will be typed.
