Hi Alan,

It all depends on how your computer or iPod Touch composes e-mails. Unless you
have it set to compose in plain text, all messages are composed in HTML, which
forces the text message to be sent as an MMS and so the data charges get
charged.

Having said that, I noticed, Teresa, that you’re using a MAC computer for your
e-mail. If that’s true, there should be in your mail settings the ability to
specify how your messages are composed, either in plain text, or HTML.

You’ll have to switch the composition of e-mails to plain text, at which point,
you can use the e-mail addresses Alan specified in his message.

Hope this helps.

Limiting Disabilities with Limitless Possibilities

Subject: RE: Sending Plain Text emails?

Teresa, the email address to use to send your husband a plain text or sms
message is a function of his mobile service provider. If you use the correct
address, you should be able to send him plain text messages from either your
computer or iPod 5. Below my signature is a summary I wrote distinguishing sms
versus mms messages and how to send both using email. I summarize the addresses
for the four main US mobile providers at the end.

It is possible to send text messages using your email client on your computer.
The messages can be plain text messages also known as SMS which stands for
Short Message Service. SMS messages are usually limited to 160 characters when
sent using a mobile device but might be limited to 140 characters when sent via
a computer's email client. This also might depend on the recipient's service
provider but I have not fully researched the limitation.

Messages with pictures or without limitation on length can also be sent via a
computer's email client. These messages are called iMessages in the iOS world
or mms messages in general. MMS stands for Multimedia Message Service.
Wikipedia has a good article explaining MMS at this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service

This page has a good discussion of MMS and SMS with a table that succinctly
compares them:

http://www.diffen.com/difference/MMS_vs_SMS

The format of the sent to address governs which type of message is sent and
varies for each provider. The format begins with the 10-digit mobile phone
number of the recipient followed by the @ sign for all providers. What follows
the @ sign varies depending on the message format and the provider. Those are
provided below for the four major US mobile service providers.

AT&T

SMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@txt.att.net

MMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@mms.att.net

Verizon

SMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@vtext.com

MMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@vzwpix.com

Sprint

SMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@messaging.sprintpcs.com

MMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@pm.sprint.com

T-Mobile

SMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@tmomail.net

MMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@tmomail.net

T-Mobile is the only provider of those listed above that uses the same address
for SMS and MMS messages. Apparently, its servers analyze the message and
format it accordingly on receipt.

I don't have an accessible cell phone for sending texts, and I frequently text
my husband's cell phone with my computer email client or iPod using
phonenumber@provider.something . If I send an html message, he gets a
multimedia message that is often delayed and costs him more money. How can I
send a plain-text email on my iPod 5?

thanks,

teresa

Slow down; you’ll get there faster.
