My phone died once. I googled the problem and tried the solution I found. Hold the power and home buttons down for about 30 seconds. After I did that, the phone came up talking again. Apparently, this happens now and then for no reason that anyone can figure out.
If it isn't a problem with VO volume, give it a try.
