Hello Sieghard,

I appreciate your common sense approach to all this talk. The world has
really changed when someone on this list says that $99 is an astronomical
price. I'm not saying it isn't higher than other apps but no one will hold a
gun to anyone's head to buy it. I was at both presentations and they were
impressive. I should also say that I went out and bought Prizmo just to have
something to compare it to when the time comes. So far Prizmo seems quite a
bit more clumsy and slow. Is it $90 slower? I haven't decided yet, perhaps
it's my inexperience. I am also curious to know how many of the people
complaining so loudly about the $99 have traded in their iPhone 4, 4s, 5, to
get to a 5s and happily paid the price each year or so for upgrades that are
at best incremental. I'm not picking on anyone about this as I am a gadget
geek myself although I still have a 4s as I haven't been dazzled by the 5 or
5s. We will see what the 6 does.

In any event, let's let them get the app out, and I too hope for a demo
version, and then see how it goes. If it proves to be a good product with
value equal to its price than fine. If not then it won't. I can tell you I
never thought in my life time we would be debating over a reading machine as
fast and accurate and small as this one is calling its $99 price tag
astronomical. Seems like a very small universe to me.

Yes, Apple did all of that, but at the same time they use a lot of
proprietary hardware and software which makes a lot of their devices and
accessories a lot more expensive than the competition and yet people have no
problems forking out $30 or $35 for a stupid little Lightning to 30 PIN
adapter which is roughly the size of a double A battery or a 3 foot piece of
cable with a USB plug on one end and a 30-Pin or Lightning plug on the
other. A comparible Micro USB cable would cost about $5 or $8.

I don't really blame Apple for this, they charge what people are willing to
pay, but I am sure KNFB put a lot of time and expertise in developing the
iOS version of KNFB Reader and from what I have heard so far it may do some
things which Prizmo or Text Grabber won't do so I think once again we should
all just wait until the app is released before passing the guilty verdict.
$99 is expensive for most apps, but I have seen other apps on the App Store
which cost that and much more and which are made for a particular target
market.

One of the things I really like about Apple, iOS in particular, is that it
has successfully allowed us to escape from the old business model of paying
a lot of money for assistive products. No longer do we have to pay a high
price to access our screens because Apple included a free access package.
No longer do we have to pay a high price for OCR apps because sighted
people, who use and require the same apps, only need to pay a few dollars
for it and, therefore, so do we. In my opinion, and this is just my
opinion, the marketing department of KNFB is doing us a tremendous
disservice by trying to bring back the 1980's and 1990's business model of
how assistive technology is distributed.

All I can say is: there better be a demo version. Offer ten scans, pop up

release a lite version. If I'm going to drop half the cost of a new iPod
Touch on one app, I want to be absolutely sure it will meet my needs first.
If they offer only the $99 app with no way of testing it, well, that's just
a bad idea.

Other platform OCR applications cost over $200. This is not priced too high
if it competes with the other OCR applications. I am curious on what it can
really do. I hear it can OCR text from 20ft away.

In my opinion, the price of this app, if it is indeed $99.00, is insanely
high and it won't be on my phone for that price. However, ultimately the
market, as it always does, will decide. I know some will purchase it at
this price. If enough people don't, then the folks at KNFB will have to
make some decisions about the price. If enough people buy it at $99.00,
then the app will likely remain at that price for some time.

If it was $30 I might consider it if other demos show equal results in speed
and accuracy, but $99? They must be on some pretty amazing drugs to think
people will pay that much for something that is only faster by a few seconds
than apps like TextGrabber or Prizmo.

Just my opinion.
