Mary, I have a Yamaha receiver with optical ins and outs and the optical out from the apple tv works fine plugged into my receiver's optical in and voice over works fine.

What I meant to say was that there is an analog Eout on the TV which goes to an analog in on the sound bar. So, I have the HDMI from the AppleTV to the television. Then I have analog from the television to the sound bar. If I try to use the digital optical direct from the AppleTV to the sound bar, voiceover is unusably choppy.
