Mary, I have a Yamaha receiver with optical ins and outs and the optical out 
from the apple tv works fine plugged into my receiver's optical in and voice 
over works fine.

Sorry, sieghard. What I meant to say was that there is an analog Eout on the TV 
which goes to an analog in on the sound bar. So, I have the HDMI from the 
AppleTV to the television. Then I have analog from the television to the sound 
bar. If I try to use the digital optical direct from the AppleTV to the sound 
bar, voiceover is unusably choppy.
