How can it sound like the default password isn't set on the server if it
/works/ from her machine?
To me, it sounds like the neighbor's ThinkPad can't talk IP to the server.
Try unplugging your ethernet and then connecting to a host. It'll take a
long time, and then time out with "can't connect to server." Alternately,
just try connecting to a machine you know isn't running the server. You'll
get the same thing.
Maybe there is a firewall you don't know about between her and the server.
Or, the server could be configured to ignore packets from "unspecial" IP
addresses. This is definitely an IP connectivity problem between the
ThinkPad and the server.
