If it's spyware or browser hijacks/popups, then antivirus programs won't
help.  Instead they need to run both of these freeware apps to clean up
their systems:

  Spybot s & d  http://www.safer-networking.org/

  ad-aware      http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

If someone with the problem finds spyware on their system, ask them what
was found (i.e. what particular spyware is doing this weird thing.)
