I would tend to agree, however I would guess that the intense magnetic fields may even with paired electrons. I suggested paired electrons, since they occupy inner shells of the Ni atom and would be closer to a coupled nuclear magnetic dipole. (It is thought that in electron capture reactions a single electron (inner shell paired) reacts with a nucleus. I am not sure whether the electro-weak force involves magnetic fields, but I would guess it does.)

In any case I did not intend to exclude unpaired electrons from magnetic interaction. Also in a BEC it is not clear to me, paired particles remain paired "within" the condensate. It may be that only the entire sum of intrinsic spin be 0 or an integer but not a half integer.

I think paired particles (either electrons or protons) have their magnetic
fields arranged:-

        NS
        SN

(use a fixed font to see this properly).

IOW they largely cancel one another's field. That means that there is very
little magnetic field left to couple with anything external.
