This may not be the advice you want but the safest thing I've found is to
just cancel the cache completely, this didn't work before but now it seems
to work fine.

I was getting sick of having to repair my drive with disksalv or
reformatting and recopying so I just got rid of the cache and to be honest I
haven't really missed it !!
