You're thinking of cookies, not cache :)

What they do (normally) is just send a unique ID to match your machine to
their database.  Take a look at some cookies to see that.  They aren't really
that much of a security risk, at most even if someone gets hold of them from
your machine they could see what books or news items you're interested in..
