Both of these books are excellent. I found the SVN book to be in-depth without assuming too much, and a good tutorial without being too "cute and noobish" (ie. I didn't get impatient reading it).

You can buy a hardcopy version of the SVN book published by O'Reilly, but it's a bit out of date. It's still great for understanding the basics, but it doesn't cover the latest features (like locking) and some of the rules of thumb may have changed. (Eg. FSFS is the solid choice of filesystem implementation for most installations. It was experimental when the hardcopy book came out.)

The main reason I jumped in is because the terminology can be confusing if you're used to older version control systems. I came from PVCS and when researching CVS a few years ago was completely confused by the different meaning of "check out", so I wanted to be sure to address that.
