Thanks to everyone who replied re my ebay query. Never fear - I
wasn't actually going to buy it - a new machine like that, I want a
warranty and a local service to fall back on - but I appreciate how
quickly I was warned off.
I thought it must be a scam, but I have seen other stuff on ebay
(yes, Newtons) that I was interested in, and wondered if the whole
of ebay was a just a giant scamfest.
I've bought several hundred dollars worth of things off eBay, and
have always got what I ordered relatively quickly. The trick is
knowing what to buy from whom :)
I've also heard bad things about Paypal, and this is sad, because
there are a few software demo sites that I would love to buy from,
but I am not willing to use paypal to do it. Are there any secure
alternatives out there?
I haven't had any problems with PayPal (BTW, it's owned by eBay).
Just remember that it's not a bank. As such it isn't subject to the
same financial rigours (but then again, it doesn't charge you the
same fees either :). I wouldn't put my life savings in it, and my
PayPal account isn't linked to a credit card with a huge limit.
eBay are also usually happy to co-operate with law enforcement types
to help stamp out scams, so it's not like there's anything shonky
with the eBay company itself.
Have fun,
Shay
