"Changing the short username in Leopard
by Dan Frakes, Macworld.com
One of the most-frequently-asked questions about Mac OS X is “How do I
change my short username?” While it's easy to change your full username
—an easily-accessible setting in Accounts preferences—the short
username, which is also the name of your home folder in the Finder,
seems set in stone (or in silicon, if you will).”
That may be what your are after.

Hi All,
I don’t know if this app would be of help to change the Short User
Name, see link http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/49930

One of the most common questions users of Mac OS X ask is "How do I
change my short username?" Although OS X provides a simple interface
-- the Accounts pane of System Preferences -- for changing a user's
long name, there's been no easy way to change the short name of an
account once it is created. …"
I have used it with success, but it was on a Tiger system. But as
alway backup the system before making major changes. The Computer
Name can be changed via System Preferences Sharing option.

It is real mystery and I did not seek to muddy the waters by noting
that my computer normally starts itself at 08:40:00 each day.
Reference to my calendar shows that on that day my son and three
small children were staying and I may in fact have manually started
the computer early but have no recollection of doing so, in any
case, no way would I have gone near Terminal! The only other
possibility would be my son logging on to my wireless network from
his laptop but surely that would not start Terminal. Tilly the cat
is in the clear, though she is a brilliant cat, I just can not see
her getting that key combination right, in any case she was hiding
in timid fear from the little children in the house!

Interesting stuff Ronni. I have no wish or desire to become
embroiled in Terminal but started it up as you suggest to check
the Computer name. Here is what I got
Last login: Sat Sep 26 08:36:07 on console
SevsG5:~ sev$
The name is correct but the last (recent) login is mysterious - I
cannot remember opening Terminal before.
Someone opened Terminal on Sat Sep 26 08:36:07 ... what was Tilly
doing at that time?
