Thanks for that. I did check and, yes, the folder was deleted on removal and
did re-appear after re-installation.

I may try and identify a version in Time machine that I know worked (ie the
folder that was there when I did a successful download) - however, as I
mentioned to Carlo, I now have doubts that the problem resides in the add-on
folder since I have deleted this by removing the add-on and re-instated it
by reverting to an add-on version that I know must have worked (ie one
(though not necessarily the latest) that I had installed when I WAS
successfully downloading.

The other thing that complicates this is that (from reading various forums)
the ABC is constantly modifying just how iView works and so sometimes the
add-ons have to be changed to accommodate that - so that a version which
worked a year ago might not work now?
