Looks like a bit of a mess. We've had several similar
incidents on this
side of the pond.
Data security is tough when the storage media are so portable
and people
neglect to think about security.

The reason this is creating such a storm - apart from the
sensitivity and the amount of the data involved - is the
failures; not a matter of neglect.
There have been three important reports about the measures that
must be taken, and the Treasury - which is in control of this
area - has assured everyone again and again that systems are in
place.
The Minister in charge of the Treasury for the last ten years,
and the one who drove all the reforms that appear to have caused
the weaknesses, is our own dear new leader, Gordon Brown, though
his puppet, Alistair Darling looks as though he will carry the
can.
The government's own chief IT advisor last night on tv, in front
of the No3 at the Treasury, called it a disaster waiting to
happen. That's tough talk from a hireling - even if only part
time.
