My instinct is that this is nice and endearing, but perhaps suggests something more along the lines of a partnership or some other collaboration. I am not sure if dropping some of the familiarity and calling them "contributors" is any better, so I'm only, at this point, indicating that it reads slightly different to me than "this project is a distribution, and it is a formal project of the community produced by contributors (members)". That's all I've got to say about that.
