So you admit you'll break most folks since their Google searches will
return the old links, at least until Google re-indexes every single
page on the site, and we have no idea how long that will take.
Not very long, they index us *very* frequently.
Every single page? And even if they're re-indexed, you'll have performed
Search Engine De-optimization, by ensuring there are no incoming links to
the new pages, so their PageRank will drop to zero, and they'll be harder
to find in google results until people start linking to them.
To the best of my knowledge, the PageRank will suffer regardless of
where the redirects drop you off. Once the content moves, the PageRank
won't follow the redirects and 'count them' as the original page. It
will need to reestablish the PageRank based on the new links for the
XWiki pages.
We also have access to the Google Dashboard for os.org, which contains
some redirect tools which will help ease the transition from a search
results standpoint.
