Have you done this yourself on a high-traffic production-level

The webservers I've done mod_rewrite rules on average 25,000 unique
visitors
and 80,000 page views per day (according to Google Analytics).
According to alexa.com's statistics, they're close to the same
number of
pageviews that opensolaris.org gets (and in some cases much higher
if you
go out to the 3 month or more charts to see the different peaks to
each
site).

Alexa isn't very comprehensive and it's not in alignment with my
logfile analysis which, for instance, shows about 300k page views
yesterday.
And you can't fairly compare apples and oranges. This is a reasonably
large, complex and mostly dynamic content site which has a whole host
of different considerations than a more simple and flat structure. The
underpinnings of this site are not as orderly as they may appear to be
and I'm being awfully kind.
As an aside, I could likely make some marked improvement on the
Finnish recipe section sometime as I spent a good bit of time learning
Finnish so that I could make Finnish food to impress my MIL. :) The
American adaptations of Swedish and Finnish food both are usually far
off the mark for some reason. I have a Swedish meatball recipe I took
from a classic 1880s Swedish cookbook that is pretty much the standard
by which all others are judged. :)
We're not all as stupid and inexperienced as you think we are.
Stupid and inexperienced weren't the two words I'd use and I didn't.
