To follow up: I wasn't able to figure out where the mysterious pipes are
coming from and why they cause the appserver to spin when I close them. 
So, I think the most sensible thing to do is use the exit code from the
appserver to signal the AppServer script to start it again.  I'll check
in code to do this, but likely not until Monday.
