Same here too.  Quite honestly, this *feature* is a main reason why we don't recommend the product to more of our customers.   For our own use, we've done some of things you guys have already suggested, plus we throw a shortcut on the desktop to a simple batch file that controls the startup/shutdown sequence, since our call center staff will invariably forget to restart the service and ruin our polling statistics.     The batch file is trivial, but effective.   It is the only way we allow our operators to start the GUI.

net stop wugsvc
\program files\whatsup\whatsupg.exe
net start wugsvc

This issue really needs to be addressed.

I'd be happy with a single session GUI that updates the active service as
soon as the save button was hit

Same hear.  I've resorted to running a continuous "RDP" session to my server
using a local account.  The issue with this is when someone decides to run a
patch on the server and the server is restarted, Whatsup is not restarted.

I'm with Bob and Steve on this; I would love to be able to make my updates
without stopping the service first.

Running Whatsup Gold as a service allows me to host the application on a
server in a computer room, however it is annoying having to stop the service
and bring up the GIU to modify app. This then sends false alerts out to
recipients and they hit panic stations if we have to modify the maps.

We run this on a terminal server, however locking the session is not an
alternative as I have as many as 10 staff who need to use their own account
to do things, and in Remote Desktop Admin Mode, one session active only
allows another to be used.

Ipswitch should be concentrating on allowing WUG to run as a service, but be
able to run the local console to modify and update the service without
having to stop it, and then causing the false alarms. Plenty of other apps
can do this already,

Steve

Rob,
Understood, though if I didn't misunderstand the original poster the point
was to make the application start, still have access to it (WUG
applications) and have it be fairly secure.

I presented the option of starting the WUG application in a terminal server
session, not on the console.  This keeps the console securely locked, and
runs WUG in a terminal server session (away from colicky fingers and prying
eyes).

Someone else suggested VNC, which also uses the console access, which
defeats the purpose of no console access.

Someone please let me know if I am on the wrong track here.

Thanks,
-Ray

About the automatically starting on reboot drawback, with win2k and XP it is
possible to set things up to automatically log in. Then all you have to do
is put a shortcut to WhatsUp in the startup folder.

To set up autologin

1. From the command line, type "control userpasswords", (or for XP "control
userpasswords2") 2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name
And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.
3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be log in as each time the computer
starts.

If you then want to automatically lock the desktop, add a batch file to the
startup folder with the following command: rundll32.exe user32.dll,
LockWorkStation

That is correct sir.

The process looks something like this:
1.) Connect to the terminal server and log in.
2.) Open the WUG application and minimize.
3.) Disconnect (do not log "off") by doing START/SHUTDOWN, then choosing
disconnect, or clicking the "x" on the terminal server window.
4.) Reconnect to make changes as needed, rinse, repeat...

The only real disadvantage is that the WUG application cannot be
automatically started on server reboot.  It has been communicated that if
any OS upgrade/changes require a reboot to the server are needed that the
tech MUST follow the above process to restart the WUG application.

So if I understand you right you leave a terminal session logged in running
WUG and just log in when you need to make changes?

Hi,
We have been running WUG in a terminal server session in Windows 2K for over
2 years now.  This does several things for us.

Allows remote administration of the application without resorting to the web
interface <--yuk!.
Allows the server console to be secured by not having a logged in user.

On another note, I would love to see Ipswitch do a major overhaul of the WUG
user administration.  There is much room for improvement in that area such
as User groups, "copy user" option, etc..

I would like to know what everyone's opinion is on running What's Up Gold as
a service or as a window app? I seem to have better luck running it as a
window app. Faster web response, easier to edit the maps, and several of my
monitors work correctly, but I don't like leaving my server logged in.
