That's precisely why Wikimedia is moving to MariaDB, which is essentially a MySQL fork with the goal to remain open. It's kind of like the StarOffice -> OpenOffice -> LibreOffice thing (actually, involving the same companies, Sun and Oracle). Try using MariaDB and telling MediaWiki that it's MySQL.
