True, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they charged and arrested
someone for downloading a pirated copy of
Star Wars EP III off the net. Its very tempting and very easy for any
die-hard movie buff to do.
To others stealing copyrighted material by simply downloading it off
the internet may not seem like a serious offense to them but to the
whole of the MPAA it most certianly is to them. Just think of any of the
millions of potential SW III fans all around the world who would be
tempted enough to do it. Multiply the cost of admission $8.50 by a
possible hypothetical 1 million potential pirates for instance who DL
the pirited movie and you've ended up costing LucasFilm and its distro's
a loss of $8,500,000. That's a lot of money to me.
It isn't fair at all to the movie viewing public who will pay their
earned money to see the most anticipated movie in SW history to
subsidize the high future ticket prices that will be caused by pirates
to cover the millions of dollars losted to them. Just for the fact the
pirates get first dibs and bragging rights as in "I just got a copy of
SW EP III
before everyone else and I paid $0.00"
To me it isn't fair and so it isn't to everyone else. Those pirates
should go to jail and pay the full price for their illegal activity. Yes
the sentence is harsh but its the law, and people who think that they
can get away with such an easy act as DL an illegal movie should be held
fully accountable for their actions.
Finally the big CEO crooks and theives of Enron who thought that they
could get away with millions got their jail sentances, the ones who
stole millions of dollars from hard working people who just work and
live pay check to pay check who got nothing to show for it but an
unemployment check and lost thousands in health and retirement
pensions.
Something to think about.

While this is all true, I think a 3 year prison sentence is a bit over
the top (ok, a lot over the top). At lot of other more serious crimes
get a shorter sentence - first time DUI often gets 30 days or less and
they have the potential to kill.
Time will tell if any judge dishes out (or an appeals court upholds) a
3 year prison sentence for copyright infringement.
