Check if the discs are only 8x, or 4-8x, or 1-8x, or up to 8x While the speed rating is usually indicating the maximum speed at which the disc can be safely spun the actual speed at which it can be written is usually selectable by the drive.
However, while spinning a disc too fast may make it disintegrate, writing too slowly may allow a less than perfectly constructed disc to 'wobble', sort of like a washing machine/spin dryer with an unbalanced load. And - just to confuse you - I have a Philips drive that appears to be happier writing at 4x or 12x on my current batch of 8x discs than at 8x, but the NEC drive is happier at 8x than at 4x.
