Thanks for the info, Chuck. As I recall, your installation procedure is the one
recommended by MS although I have also installed Win2000 and Win98SE after 
WinXP. 

Mostly I have just used separate partitions and not different physical hard 
drives
for my multi-boot systems. I'd like a virtual Wi98SE drive so I don't have to
reboot from WinXP to use Win98SE. 

Now I've found the manual for Virtual PC. It says, at page 7, "Virtual PC 
supports
two serial ports and one parallel port device per guest operating system. It 
does
not support Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices on the guest operating system.
However, a guest operating system may have access to services provided by a USB
device attached to the physical computer. For example, a guest operating system
could use a drive provided by a USB device if the drive was made available 
through
the Shared Folders feature." I'll think about this a bit to determine whether or
not I can establish a virtual drive and OS on a separate USB hard drive. :-)
