and tweaking the internals of the file

well - a copy of it that is!

after you find an explanation of the .xls file format

Consider sections such as 6.42 --> 6.112

The real problem is that you need to find, and correct/adjust whatever is
stopping excel ( or better OpenOffice) from opening the file

One other thing - try saving a copy of the file with a Dos (8.3) format name
in C:\Temp and processing that
