A friend's old Dell (XP SP1, 384 meg RAM, P4-1.8gig, 20 gig HD) cannot
seem to run very well. When you check CPU usage in Task Manager, it
shows 100% usage.

The memory is in the form of 1 256meg stick and 1 128 meg stick of DDR.
Removing the 128 meg stick actually makes the computer functional again,
but the CPU usage is still 100%.

There are no programs running. I have run a current version of AdAware
and run a complete virus scan. No spyware was found, but 6 viruses were
found and cleaned out.

Using msconfig.exe, I have shut down all the services listed in
start-up.

Still, the computer shows 100% CPU usage.

Does anyone know what could be eating up the CPU time?

Thanks,

Rod Lindgren
