OK. Followed procedure to the letter. No activity at all is shown when I
alter the connection settings. If HKCU is an allowed contraction of
HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then registry editor shows *no* RAS key under
..\Software\Microsoft. Only RAS Autodial and RAS Phonebook.

How to investigate:
1. Download regmon from sysinternals.com.
2. Run it - immediately click File, Capture Events (to turn off capture).
3. Click Options, Filter/Highlight.
4. Replace the * on the Include line with this:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\RAS
5. Uncheck "Log Reads" and "Log Opens". Click OK to close filter
settings.
6. Click File, Capture Events. Leave Regmon running.
