The one and only problem that I have had doing any type of Windows XP
activation was about a month ago. My mother's hard drive crashed and
I brought her machine home with me. I put in a brand new drive and
intalled XP, immediately updated to SP2 and subsequent patches, added
drivers, AVG anti-virus, Spybot and some other stuff. The little
activation icon kept doing its thing, so I clicked it to activate and
it denied me.
I hadn't brought any of her installation disks home with
me. Apparently, the activation site didn't like the fact that I had
used my XP install disk with her key. I was puzzled because I had
done that very same thing before on several other occasions: Used my
XP install disk with another person's key when fixing, upgrading,
etc. that person's system. In the past, it always activated without
a hitch. This time I actually had to pick up the phone and call them.
The only painful part about that was speaking an umpteen digit number
into the phone for the automated responder, only to hear "I can't
help you". <roll> Once I got an actual person, I explained what
happened and a few moments later he said "OK, click Next" and
everything was fine.
