Then perhaps add in a large screen - for use as in-residence TV/display, -
full size keyboard, TV tuner, and mouse - together with wireless USB
connector - perhaps it's better to avoid wireless around the campus,
unless the campus provides net connectivity for students.
Also - add in a separate battery and charger - weighty to carry perhaps but
for a full day probably worth it.
And - a reasonable laser printer - mono will probably do
money bags. :) As a parent of several college students... they will
most likely rather have a separate TV (mine did), it's too hard to
watch and work at the same time when sharing a screen with a TV. Most
colleges have printers - some charge a per page fee, others allow up
to xx pages a semester at no charge. I'd get a spare power supply but
probably not a spare battery - most classrooms have plently of
outlets.
Not sure a RAM DVD is needed with a large hard drive,
Kids will find all sorts of things to burn - and most laptops come
with dvd burners as standard.
I'd say stick to writing session type DVD's as backups - 1 a day, usually
written to -RW media so they can be re-used . also - perhaps a weekly +
or -R as a permanent record.
Not forgetting a couple of images of the system for when it gets wiped by
the friendly room-mate/visitor
i'd use cards for backup - thats why they have so many slots builtin.
:) Actually, we use SDs for data rather than worrying so much about
backups. If anything, i'd subscribe them to an online backup service -
the one mentioned the other day was free for up to 1 or 2 GB. But more
seriously, no college kid, especially one not much into computers, is
going to mess with backups.
Then - what firewall, AV and 'office' applications will you use/ install
Picture management, DTP,
colleges usually supply the firewall and AV software - they may also
supply office 2003, if not, student version is under $150.
