I get the same thing (SMP machine - Abit BP-6 using MPS 1.4)

Well, a make dep; make clean; make bzImage; make modules && make
modules_install.  Copied the System.map across too...

Definitively...All hunks patched correctly, I still get the same
problem...This is with the 2.2.16-9mdk kernel source...Oh, and I have turned
off Magic SysRq Key support...
